The plan for West Fairview Avenue in Montgomery, Alabama will meet all of its first year goals including the construction of Phase 1 of Lanier Place according to Mayor Todd Strange. Three houses are constructed and for sale and more are on the way according to Gary Blackman, Project Director and Owner of Distinctive Homes of Alabama. The houses represent reinvestment in the West Fairview Avenue area of West Montgomery and are part of the City’s West Montgomery Initiative and the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s nationwide effort to repopulate central city neighborhoods.
What is unique about the project for 55 new homes, pedestrian-friendly streets, and a residential green, is its context-sensitive design which restores the neighborhood’s historic pattern of blocks, streets and alleys with homes that fit the historic character of the existing front-porch community. Lanier Place is within walking distance to West Fairview Ave, a historic center of West Montgomery, and under the plan new civic buildings, streetscape improvements and recreational spaces are also under development. Public investment is expected to lead to private investment, and according to Jeffery Downes, Montgomery Deputy Mayor the number of queries from and conversations with potential investors have increased dramatically in recent months.
