Centennial Hill Charrette, Montgomery, Alabama

The Dover-Kohl team completed a charrette for Montgomery Alabama’s Centennial Hill area and the grand public park, Oak Park. Centennial Hill was an affluent middle class African American community after the Civil War and up until the early 1960s. From this community came many of the leaders of the Civil Rights movement. The plan aims to restore the historic housing fabric, network of pedestrian-friendly streets, and former main street environment, in tandem with planned growth at neighboring Alabama State University and Jackson Hospital. A complete plan and SmartCode zoning district for the neighborhood are underway.

The five day charrette held November 28 through December 4 was well attended and the Work-in-Progress Presentation was well received. When the 40 attendees of the presentation were asked if the plan was on the right track by use of keypad polling they responded 88% yes, 12% maybe yes, 0% no. Dover-Kohl was joined by Hall, Planning & Engineering and Urban Advisors and was greatly assisted by city staff under the direction of Interim Planning Director, Chad Emerson.
