A Mix of Development and Preservation Presented at the Northwest Master Plan and Transmountain Road Charrette

Over 50 attendees at the Work-in-Progress Presentation and Open House for the Northwest Master Plan discussed the Smart Code scenarios presented for the scenic corridor and surrounding lands. Attendees offered support, concerns, and recommendations for moving forward. The plan describes a mix of uses, complete neighborhoods, and multi-modal, pedestrian-friendly throughfares, as well as over 65% open space in the form of preserved arroyos, public spaces and recreational spaces. In the coming months more detailed scenarios for the lands will be drafted and presented to the public.

Northwest Master Plan and Comprehensive Plan Approval Meetings Underway

The Hands-on Session at Canutillo Elementary School for the Northwest Master Plan and Transmountain Road Charrette was well attended by El Pasoans from throughout the City. During the interactive public session participants evaluated multiple scenarios for the corridor and surrounding lands created by the design team and then composed their own scenarios and presented their designs to the group. DKP will refine the ideas produced by the public in the week ahead. Criterion Planners will provide a quantitative evaluation of the development scenarios to inform decision-makers. Urban Advantage wil present visualizations of the plans.

The team also continues to work with elected and appointed officials to approve Plan El Paso, the City's new Comprehensive Plan. The plan was approved unanimously by the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee and will be considered next by the City Planning Commission.

Pulelehua Receives Approval from Maui County Council

Maui County Council has approved the proposed development of the Pulelehua neighborhoods in West Maui, HI. Led by Dover, Kohl & Partners, a plan for a compact, sustainable community of three distinct neighborhoods over 300+ acres was created in 2004 through a public charrette process. The plan offers a mix of uses, housing types, open spaces and activities; the neighborhood will provide the opportunity for people to live nearby jobs at West Maui’s resorts and employment centers, containing a mix of affordable and market-rate units.

The plan previously received approval from the State Land Use Commission in June 2006. Next steps will include engineering drawings for the initial phases, and ground breaking for off-site improvements.

Public Charrette to be held in East Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago

East Port of Spain, the cultural capital of Trinidad and Tobago, is rich in history and is home to icons in culture, music and sports. However, some communities in East Port of Spain have also attracted a reputation for crime and violence. Residents are most times unemployed, earn low incomes and live in poverty. East Port of Spain is also stigmatized by the remainder of the national population.

Dover-Kohl will embark on a 10 day intensive charrette engaging the residents of East Port of Spain to develop a Master Plan for six Comprehensive Development Areas. The mission of the East Port of Spain Development Company is captured in their slogan “Regeneration through Transformation”. The goal of this charrette is to seek to transform the image of East Port of Spain in the minds of the general public and some of the area’s residents through urban design and revitalization. Participation in the planning and development process is key to success in such a strategy.
