Connecting El Paso, which received a National Award for Smart Growth Achievement from US EPA in 2011, was featured in a documentary during the San Diego conference at a luncheon session attended by over four hundred. The video included pictures, renderings, and graphics from the document which was unanimously adopted by the City of El Paso as well as interviews with El Paso policy makers and citizens who assisted Dover, Kohl & Partners in the initiative. Only five projects in the nation received the EPA distinction in 2011.
Plan El Paso is a transit-oriented plan that will link new and revitalized neighborhoods to one another and to centers of economic opportunity via a Bus Rapid Transit system which is scheduled to begin operation in 2014. Nora Johnson, Policy Fellow with US EPA, said, "Projects like these represent the latest thinking and best approaches in smart growth practices."
